Rossmoyne Pet Oxygen Mask Kit Fundraiser

img1Project Paws Alive, a non-profit organization, has joined with presenting sponsor Rossmoyne Animal Emergency Trauma Center to kick-off its fundraising effort to provide Pet Oxygen Recovery Mask Kits for six Fire/EMS agencies in parts of the Harrisburg, PA area.

The six agencies to receive the equipment consists of West Shore EMS, Fairview Township EMS, Newberrytown EMS, Camp Hill EMS, East Pennsboro and Harrisburg. All vehicles within each agency will receive a Pet Oxygen Recovery Mask kit for a grand total of 50 kits.

Unlike humans who instinctively run out during fires, pets instinctively look for a hiding place to protect them from the fire which results in far too many pets dying each year of smoke asphyxiation. While firemen attempt to get pets safely out of burning structures, they are not able to revive them unless they have the proper equipment — pet oxygen recovery masks.

Cat-fire-1These specially designed animal masks can be used both on conscious pets that have suffered from smoke inhalation and pets that need to be resuscitated after losing consciousness from exposure to the dangerous toxic fumes.

Pet Oxygen Recovery Mask Kits are not standard equipment for first responders. Most first responder agencies (fire, rescue, EMS) are not permitted to purchase equipment that is not for use on humans. Additionally, many of these agencies have had budget cuts and cannot afford to buy these kits. First responders are not authorized to use equipment that is not on their vehicle which is why it is important that funds be raised to donate these kits.

The Pet Oxygen Recovery Mask Kits to be donated are the highest end kit available. The kit comes with 3 different size masks that can be used on dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and more. gasmask_1113728aThese durable polycarbonate masks feature dual vents and a rubber mounted 22mm oxygen adapter enabling unrestricted inhalation and exhalation of air. The masks are reusable and will last for years to come.  Each kit contains three masks of varying sizes, oxygen air tubes for each mask, a laminated instruction sheet for quick reference, a kennel lead for animal restraint & control, 2 animal Incident Report forms, Pet Rescue Notice forms, 2 “Oxygen Masks On Board” decals to display on vehicle or at station, and one reflective carry bag per kit for easy storage, mobility and identification.

Rossmoyne Animal Emergency & Trauma Center in Mechanicsburg, PA will be conducting instructional training for the receiving first responders so that they will understand how to use the mask kits and kennel lead, which mask to use and when, safety protocol on unconscious pets, and CPR for Cats & Dogs.
