VCA Animal Hospitals donates $20,000 to Project Paws Alive for Police K9s

VCA Ohio Region C7 & Specialty Hospitals Region CS4 collected donations by encouraging clients to round up their transaction amounts to the nearest dollar or donate online. The campaign raised just over $20,000 to support Project Paws Alive who is dedicated to providing protective K9 safety equipment to underfunded Law Enforcement K9s units nationwide. This donation will enable Project Paws Alive to continue our important work in communities, protecting law enforcement K9s with such items as bulletproof vests, military grade first aid kits with narcan, specialized cooling vests, and hot n’pop vehicle heat alarm systems.

“A donation of this size is significant for us,” commented Cheryl Allen, President at Project Paws Alive. “It costs $1,400 per vest, $350 per first aid kit, and at least $6,000 for a complete vehicle heat alarm system and the nationwide demand for equipment by underfunded K9 units is much higher than the supply of funds so this donation will absolutely go to good use.”

Kano is a 1 year old, Red Nose Pitbull. Kano is very much a large puppy still. Kano is the FIRST Pit Bull Police K9 in the state of Kansas. Kano is a single purpose detection K9. Kano is trained to locate Marijuana, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Heroin, and Ecstasy. Kano is a rescue from Negras, Mexico. Kano was rescued by Animal Farm Foundation and Universal K9. Kano was named Kano based on a character from Mortal Kombat based on his facial markings. Kano and the dogs in the Universal K9 program were invited to the ICMA conference. ICMA is the largest annual event in the world for local government managers and staff. Leaders from all over the country were at this conference and could watch these dogs work. Since being on the street, Kano has assisted with 3 drug offenses. Including approximately 8 grams of Methamphetamine, $7,500 worth of Marijuana, and Paraphernalia. Kano has not only been helping get drugs off of the street but also showing a positive role for the Pitbull breed walking through the school, and retirement home. Kano is the true meaning of “Street Dog to Police Dog” a phase used by Universal K9 Director Brad Croft. These dogs are not only rescued from shelters but they rescue their handlers as well! Kano was photographed prior to leaving training by Ivey Photography. Kano and the other dogs in the program will be on the cover of “K9 Cop” magazine

Hero Dog Judges: http://herodogawards.org/judges/

The American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards® are an annual, nationwide competition that searches out and recognizes America’s Hero Dogs – often ordinary dogs who do extraordinary things, whether it’s saving lives on the battlefield, lending sight or hearing to a human companion, or simply providing the tail-wagging welcome a pet owner relishes at the end of a hard day. Dogs compete in eight different categories for the Hero Dog Awards: Law Enforcement Dogs, Arson Dogs, Service Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Military Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, Guide/Hearing Dogs, and Emerging Hero Dogs (the category for “ordinary” dogs who do extraordinary things). The Hero Dog Awards celebrate the powerful, age-old bond between dogs and people – and give recognition to courageous acts of heroism performed by our four-legged best friends.

After voting by the American public, winners in each category are flown to Hollywood with their human friends to attend the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards® gala in Los Angeles. There they walk the red carpet, are recognized in video tributes, receive their Hero Dog category award statue and mingle with celebrities, both two-legged and four-legged! The 2016 American Hero Dog will then be announced to the world.

K9 Kai; Hero Dog Awards Finalist – Please Vote!

Arson Dog Kai : From Animal Shelter to Red Carpet

davis_kaiIt’s a Cinderella story. Abandoned by her family in 2009 in McLean County, IL a stray Labrador retriever named Ellie – and later renamed Kai – dug determinedly through a large box of toys, looking for the tennis ball and ignoring the rest of the toys.

That single-minded focus saved her life.

An employee of the Humane Society of Central Illinois contracted a trainer, who assessed Kai’s skills. In April 2010, Kai entered the State Farm® Arson Dog Program and after four weeks of training with her handler, Justin Davis, they were a certified accelerant detection canine team. Kai is trained to find miniscule traces of flammable liquids within minutes and seconds.

784x2048To date, she has worked 200 fire- and bomb-related investigations across San Antonio and Bexar County in Texas. In addition to a regular caseload, she accompanies her handler Justin Davis on local appearances about fire safety to local schools and at college level forensic classes.

Today, the accelerant detection canine has been voted one of eight finalists in the American Humane Society Hero Dog Awards contest. Sponsored by State Farm, Kai and her handler will represent the Arson Dog category at the Hero Dog Awards gala at The Beverly Hilton hotel on Sept. 27. There they will walk the red carpet, conduct VIP interviews, and attend the star-studded awards show and black-tie gala where the winning 2014 American Hero Dog will be chosen.

Quite a comeback for an abandoned pet!

8132964107_3ab2cf5bbf_o“This year’s slate of hero dogs represents the best of our best friends,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Association. “Their remarkable stories of valor deserve recognition at the highest level, and we are privileged to honor their accomplishments once a year in this national forum.”

Davis also praised his canine companion.

“I feel like, since she was from a shelter rescue, she’s a perfect example of what a shelter dog can accomplish if given the right opportunity,” Davis said.

8132996680_63e0573b0a_oTheir relationship goes beyond investigating charred scenes. At the end of the day, Kai makes the trip home with Davis where she’s a treasured member of his family.

All eight finalists will win $1,500 for their chosen charity. Kai’s charity is Project Paws Alive, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides life-saving protective K9 equipment to units nationwide that cannot otherwise afford it. The top winner wins an additional $5,000 for their charity partner.

Show your support for our Arson Dog program by voting for Kai to help determine which heroic hound will be named this year’s  American Hero Dog. The public is invited to submit one vote per day through Sept. 15 at http://www.herodogawards.org/vote/?nominee=89247242.
