Milton Police Department K9 Unit Fundraiser

DSC_0005Project Paws Alive is conducting a fundraising effort with Milton resident Claudine Wilkins to raise money to provide vital equipment for the Milton Police K9 Unit in Milton, GA. The equipment needed for the unit consists of a K-9 Ballistic Vest, K-9 First Aid Field Trauma kit, K-9 Cooling Vest, K9 Working Dog boots, a K9 Pro vehicle heat alarm system, and Pet Oxygen Mask kits.

The Milton Police K-9 Unit consists of new K-9 Kyro along with his partner, Officer Christopher Ward. The K-9 specializes in full patrol work.

The K-9 ballistic protective vests are bullet-proof and stab-proof containing level IIA ballistic protection and level III spike protection which exceeds the current National Institute of Justice (NIJ) 06 regulations. These vests are cut from the same Kevlar® bulletproof cloth as their human partners, covering all the vital organs. These vests help protect the K-9s from gun shots, stabbings, and other blunt force trauma such as being kicked, punched, or beaten with a weapon or other dangerous object while on duty. These protective vests are a vital piece of equipment to protect law enforcement K-9s.

k9-AEach K-9 body armor vest donated by Project Paws Alive is custom manufactured using the latest technology and materials in order to fit the body shape and size of each K-9 officer. The vests are designed so that the K-9s can wear the vests the entire time that they are working with their assigned handlers. They offer outstanding ballistic protection with ease of movement, breathe-ability and cooling comfort in a rigorously field-tested vest.

The K-9 Tactical First Aid Field Trauma Kit is designed for use by Law Enforcement, Military, Fire, EMS, and Search & Rescue K-9 Units. This kit contains specific supplies needed to treat the K-9 for injuries ranging from gunshot and knife wounds to snake bites.

K-9 teams face substantial risks on a daily basis. These dogs have been punched, stabbed, poisoned and shot by fleeing suspects. Those who work in Search & Rescue, Apprehension and Explosive Detection teams have an increased risk of injury due to extreme conditions, poisoning, or explosion. Tracking teams that spend hours in the woods and remote areas do not have access to immediately available emergency care.

k9 traumaWhile emergency care is often readily available to the handler, the same cannot be said of the their canine partner. Training officers to administer first aid to their injured canine partner is only part of the solution, equipping them with a K-9 tactical first aid trauma kit for use in the field can make a huge difference.

Distribution of these kits will give the handlers the means to do just that. In addition, everything in the kit can also be used to treat and/or the save the life of the human handler.

The K-9 cooling vests are specifically designed for police, military, search and rescue K-9s that work in high heat conditions. They use advanced Phase Change Cooling Material to maintain a constant cool temperature of 58F around the K-9. The outer material is 100% light-weight cotton. The Phase Change Material or PCM is a non-toxic chemical that freezes at 58F and stays at that temperature for 2-4 hrs. It works by absorbing heat away from the body. It is not a cold vest, it is a cool vest, and is designed to keep the K-9 cool and comfortable, not cold therefore there is no discomfort. There is no ice burn, condensation or fluctuating temperatures with PCM, like you would have with an ice vest. PCM is not water based, it is a carbon based liquid and it is 25% lighter than water. PCM is also safe for the K-9s as it is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, and non-flammable. These vests are a must for K-9s that often have to work in extremely hot weather and fit comfortably under ballistic vests when needed.

KK-K9-HP-5010Every year working dogs die from being left in unattended and overheated vehicles. Police and Fire vehicles typically leave the car’s AC running if they are not in the vehicle with their K-9. These K-9s dutifully protect their communities and handlers without hesitation and do it happily. But what happens if the AC starts to push out hot air? What happens if the engine shuts off? The horrific reality is that the vehicle will overheat rapidly and the K-9 will be trapped inside with no way to get out. Tragically, K-9s die from these heat-stroke related accidents every year.

DSC_0032-001Project Paws Alive has partnered with AceK9 to offer their top of the line vehicle heat alarm system called the “Hot n’ Pop Pro” through exclusive pricing. The AceK9 Hot n’ Pop Pro unit monitors vital components including temperature sensors and vehicle battery voltage. The information is shown on a 32-character backlit alphanumeric display. If an alarm condition is detected, the unit will activate a S.O.S. Horn Honk signal, siren and light-bar activation and dual window drop. This system not only makes automatic corrective actions to the heat, it audibly and visually alerts everyone nearby. As a last measure, the system will open the vehicle door allowing the K-9 to exit. From beginning to end the officer is alerted via horns, sirens, lights and digital transmitters worn on their person. The unit also includes a cold temp alert should the vehicle temp drop below a set degree for year-round K-9 protection.

DSC_0014Project Paws Alive will include the “No K9 Left Behind” add-on to each heat alarm system donated. The “No K9 Left Behind” option is exclusive to AceK9 and provides an end of shift system monitor which will alert and continue to alert until the door to the K-9 has been fully opened to release the K9 and the officer has acknowledged the release of the K-9. Thus providing yet another layer of safety to protect against distractions and other instances where a K-9 may be accidentally left in a vehicle at the end of shift.

Please consider donating or becoming a sponsor today. Our goal is to raise $6,000 to provide this vital equipment to the Milton Police Department K-9 Unit. All donations and sponsorships are tax-deductible.
